Wine all you want… in a box.

We were asked to submit a prototype / sample of a wine box to a company that handles public relations for The Philadelphia Phillies. They wanted the costs a little lower per piece than we were able to do so we didn’t get the contract. It was a sad missing out on that, but I’m happy with the sample we submitted.

Oddly enough, the only off cuts I had at the time were walnut, which is beautiful and warm and did I mention beautiful…? But it’s also pricey. The price I quoted them was for cherry, maple, or pine, all more or less the same pricing tier. Off cuts are free, after all.

The box is a simple mitered-corner box with slotted in bottom/back and top/front/lid. In this case, the lid slides out of the body, and is held in place with a pair of very strong rare earth magnets. The four wine bottle slots were sized for regular, randomly-selected bottles of wine from the local liquor store.

I added some walnut and maple shavings (created with a hand plane) and packed the bottles of wine into the box with the shavings. The presentation was, if I do say so myself, quite nice. Alas, price stops all projects sometimes. As mentioned, we didn’t get the contract, but it was enough to get our names in front of a lot of people who might not have heard of us otherwise, and we’ll be included in future submissions with this company.

Worth the time to do make the prototype, for sure.
