Nesting things for gewgaws and rings!

Once again, Lazy Gretl Wood Works helped in a hopeful way by donating a small project to Delaware’s Breast Cancer Coalition’s silent auction and gala.

These three nesting bowls are made out of sapele mahogany, a lovely, deep, chatoyant wood from Africa. I love working with this wood; it machines wonderfully, and is absolutely beautiful with tight, consistent grain, and predictable coloring and tone. It takes oil and waxes well, and has a lovely feel in the hand. It begs to be touched.

Shown above in their final form, just before last sanding and oiling, these boxes nest comfortably, and the lid for the larger, outer box can double as a tray, or a saucer-like underlay for the larger box. It’s contoured and cut to fit the outer box snugly. These were created from milled blocks of straight grain lumber, using a small CNC to define the shape of the interior area and wall thickness (roughly 5mm), and the rest of the interior and exterior shaping was done partially by hand (outer) and using a router table and bowl bits. Taking roughly 1/8″ out of the center per pass, it took a while to hollow and refine the bowl shape, but as a labor of love donation, it was far more than worth it.

Please let us know how we can help furnish your life today, from curio boxes to full furniture suits for any room… Lazy Gretl Wood Working is here.

PS… I always thought it was ‘geegaws’, but it seems its most proper form is gewgaws.
