My wife needed a place to hold all those little cards that you wrap needlepoint floss around for storage. I had some time, and some red grandis lumber waiting around for a reason to cut into it. Lo and behold, both, this seemed the one. So I got to cuttin’.

The box, over all, is about 18 inches wide, about 6 1/2 inches tall, and about 8 1/2 inches deep. I work in metric, like every good American should (why are we so against it here, anyway?), so it’s more like 460mm by 160mm by 220mm. The three drawers each have 8 channels of slotted bays to hold the floss cards, and one general, unslotted area. Each of the slotted bays has 16 slots, for a total of 384 slots across all the drawers.

The drawer boxes and bottoms are made of maple. The interior parts are not oiled. The outer case and drawer fronts are the red grandis, oiled with Sample 73 hard wax oil from Chris Salomone from Four Eyes Furniture. The drawer slides are hard maple strips, about 5mm thick, running in slotted blocks of cherry attached to the inner sides of the box. The rear panel is installed in a groove like any typical cabinet, and is made of high density hardboard I just happened to have had sitting around.

This will sit atop my wife’s crafting cabinet. The drawers are easily removable so she can leave the box in place and move the drawers to her work area as desired. Fun build, and a nice, quick, easy project to bang out before the holidays.
Thanks for taking a look.
